In essence, parents only give birth to their children. It’s their admirable teachers that turn them into functioning members of society. Still, no president is set for this noble job. At the college or the university level, yes the teachers do need to be qualified enough to get the job most of the time. But when it comes to teaching children, no criteria have been set in place.
It is an area where only those who have specialized the skill should get the permission to be in such close proximity of the developing minds of the children. Those qualified individuals who know how to properly deal with the younglings and whose presence only has a positive impact on the minds of children should be hired.
The reason why becoming a teacher isn’t on anyone’s priority list is because teachers have to live their lives paycheck to paycheck. Their income is so low that their students grow up to become successful and wealthy, while they still have to drive a 20-year-old, barely functioning car. This is a huge issue as more and more people are turning away from teaching as time goes on. A time will come when qualified teachers will no longer be available if things stay the way they are.
The discussion about the condition of the buildings of the schools in the rural areas of Pakistan is also a sad one. Places where the buildings are actually built, lack the basic necessities like electricity and water. The equipment for teaching like school furniture and stationary for the students isn’t present. Students have to sit on the ground, under the shade of a tree and use sacks as seats and share the scarcely available stationary supplies.
At some locations, the building of the school either just exists on paper, and corrupt teachers hired by corrupt government officials just collect their paychecks when it is due, and if the building exists, it doesn’t serve its purpose of educating the youth of the country. Rather, they serve as stables for animals or as private buildings for one corrupt individual or the other.
Raising the standards of education in the rural areas is going to take a lot of acts of philanthropy. We as a society need to understand that education is not a luxury, rather it is a basic human right. The financial situations of the people living in the urban areas is a key point that is keeping them from getting ahead in life by receiving the quality education that they deserve.
This issue needs to be addressed at the government level and the general population needs to recognize this as a problem too. Since it is no longer an issue of growing the economy of the country by churning out educated professionals who contribute to the growth, but rather it has now become a matter of human rights violation.
